The benefit of a Start-To-Finish School Package is that a cohesive story underpins your entire application. mbaSTORY.builders quality controls everything the admissions committee sees and hears, from you. The Start-To-Finish School Package includes everything you need (and some things you may not have thought of) to submit a winning application: Unlimited Phone Support, School Selection, a Story-based Resume Writing, Statement of Purpose and Essay Writing, Recommendation Writing or Support (depending on your recommenders’ preferences), Application Short Answer Writing, Mock Interviews, Offer Management or Waitlist Strategy. A school package is a high-touch service for clients who want a trusted adviser on call from the beginning to the end of their application process.

As with all our standalone service, if you opt for the Start-To-Finish School Package there is no limit on the number of edits or rewrites for the various components of your application(s). You’ll have full access to your consultant at every step of the process.

Deliverable: Start-To-Finish MBA/EMBA Application Packages include the following services: Unlimited Phone Support, School Selection, Story-based Resume Writing, Statement of Purpose and Essay Writing, Recommendation Writing or Support (depending on your recommenders’ preferences), Application Short Answer Writing, Mock Interviews, Offer Management or Waitlist Strategy. A package is a high-touch service for clients who want a trusted adviser on call from the beginning to the end of their application process.

Rome wasn’t built in a day. It’s best to begin a package at least six weeks before your submission deadline. Reach out for a free consultation to discuss your situation and application plan.

Pricing: Your first school (i.e., your first MBA/EMBA application) is $8,000. Each additional school is $1,500.

1 School: $8,000 | 2 Schools: $9,500 | 3 Schools: $11,000 | 4 Schools: $12,500 | 5 Schools: $14,000 | 6 Schools: $15,500

This pricing structure is on par with competitors such as mbaMission and Stacy Blackman. The value differentiation is that mbaSTORY.builders writes client material (in collaboration with the client) whereas these other consulting services only offer verbal and written guidance to the client (the writing remains the client’s responsibility).

Question: Can I start with a standalone service (such as the Story-Based Resume Writing service) and switch to a package later? Answer: Yes as long as the switch is made within a reasonable and feasible timeframe. Discuss this with your consultant.

Question: Can I add additional schools to my package? Answer: Yes, as long as there is ample time to complete an additional school before its submission deadline. Discuss with your consultant.

Process: Generally the Start-To-Finish MBA/EMBA Application Package begins with the School Selection service and the Story-based Resume Writing service.

Turnaround Time: Each service contains several deliverables. The turnaround time for any one deliverable (like new edits to a document based on client feedback) is a maximum of two business days (see the FAQs for more information). Total turnaround time is not just a function of the two-day policy but also a function of a) the client’s availability to schedule calls and b) the amount of time the client requires to provide feedback on drafts.

Story-based Resume Writing Service

$1,000

ADD SERVICE

Every Story-based Resume is one-of-a-kind.

The Story-based Resume engages and compels the reader and delivers results with a structure that lays out your overarching professional story and story-based bullet points that recount big-picture achievements and more granular, behavioral stories. Behaviorally-based bullet points give the reader insight into your interpersonal skills, your ability to lead/persuade others, how you think and tackle issues (your cognitive abilities), your capacity for creative/lateral thinking, and finally whether you’ll add value to their school (in the context of an MBA/EMBA application) or their team (in the case of a job application).

In the context of the MBA or EMBA admissions process, your resume is a roadmap and the backbone of your application. It helps the admissions committee member a. contextualize the material discussed in your essays, b. better understand your recommendations, c. gauge your professional potential.

Please take a moment to review some before & after resumes from past clients.

Deliverable: The Story-based Resume Writing Service is a complete retelling of your professional story. It includes a new design (a rethinking of your resume’s structure + a new resume template) and fresh, story-based bullet points. Story-based Resumes range from one to two pages in length.

At the end of this service, clients receive a PDF version of their resume as well as a modular Word document which they can edit and build on in the future.

Process: Client completes the brainstorming document (view the file here) → Story-gathering during two client-consultant phone calls (1.5 hours each, 3 hours in total) → 1st resume draft → Feedback (typically a client-consultant call) → Subsequent resume edits until both client and consultant are satisfied with the final product.

Turnaround Time: Each service contains several deliverables. The turnaround time for a given deliverable (like new edits to a document based on client feedback) is a maximum of two business days (see the FAQs for more information). Total turnaround time is not just a function of the two-day policy, but also a funciton of a) the client’s availability to schedule calls and b) the amount of time the client requires to complete the brainstorming document or provide feedback on resume drafts.

mbaSTORY.builders is not a low-quality resume factory such as TopResume TopStackResume or CareerPlusResumes …. and the list goes on.  The Story-based Resume is a carefully crafted document and takes a minimum of a week to produce. This service won’t be a fit for you if you need a resume “tomorrow”.

Essay or Statement of Purpose Writing Service

$400 (<300 words) - $800 (>300 words)

ADD SERVICE

While a resume is an overview of your professional achievements a compelling essay adds depth to what you’ve accomplished and who you are as a person.

Many professionals are comfortable whipping up reports, memos, and emails but aren’t as familiar with the personal essay format. For many, essay outlining, writing, and editing are the most difficult and frustrating aspects of the MBA application process. All people are fundamentally interesting and our clients have interesting stories to tell but don’t necessarily enjoy penning them. Following a client-consultant call to brainstorm and gather information, clients can rest easy knowing that their essay will be written and revised for them.

The service begins with a 60 to 90-minute client-consultant brainstorming call.

Your consultant will look for material that creates an engaging essay (with an eye to telling stories that help round out your overall profile). For example, if your resume portrays you as highly quantitative, your consultant may steer you toward an essay that highlights complementary qualities (qualitative achievements, interpersonal skills, leadership moments, etc.).

Deliverable: An essay or statement of purpose that is engaging, compelling, and genuine.

Process: Client emails current resume and target MBA/EMBA program/essay info → 60 to 90-minute client-consultant brainstorming call  → Client receives the first draft of their essay or statement of purpose → Feedback → Subsequent edits until both client and consultant are satisfied with the final product.

Turnaround Time: Each service contains several deliverables. The turnaround time for a given deliverable (like new edits to a document based on client feedback) is a maximum of two business days (see the FAQs for more information). Total turnaround time is not just a function of the two-day policy, but also a function of a) the client’s availability to schedule calls and b) the amount of time the client requires to complete the brainstorming document or provide feedback on resume drafts.

You may be interested in the mbaSTORY.builders eBooks that feature MBA & EMBA essays and statements of purpose. Each of these books contains 25 essay examples from successful applicants to elite MBA and EMBA programs.

This eBook was written to help and inspire applicants to MIT Sloan’s 2-year, MBA program, the MIT Sloan LGO (Leaders for Global Operations) program, and the MIT Sloan Fellows program. It contains 25 well-written cover letters that applicants can draw on with examples from a cross-section of industries and job functions.

Recommendation Writing Service

$800

ADD SERVICE

The Recommendation Writing Service gives you peace of mind knowing that your recommender is communicating clearly in written English, accurately conveying his/her ideas, and avoiding inadvertently divulging something that could adversely affect your application. Depending on your recommender’s preferences, your consultant will offer services such as recommendation writing, recommendation editing, or recommendation outlining.</P

Recommendation Writing takes the pressure off of your recommender by strategizing and then writing the recommendation for them.

Recommendation Editing gives your recommender the opportunity to have his/her recommendation edited/commented.

Recommendation Outlining provides recommenders with a detailed outline that defines topics and supporting examples that your recommender can use to structure his/her recommendation.

Deliverable: I will read through the recommendation. The main purpose of this service is to clean up the document – making sure an outside reader clearly understands what your recommender is talking about and that the English is clear. My goal is to maintain your recommender’s voice while tightening up the writing. If there are major oversights that I think the recommender should address, I will comment those areas of the document. Not providing examples or specific-enough examples and failing to compare the candidate to his/her peers are common issues I see.

Process: You’ll purchase the service online and either upload the recommendation as you’re going through the checkout process or ask your recommender to directly email me your recommendation leah@fxmbaconsulting.com → I’ll edit/comment the document and return it to you/them within 2 working days.

Turnaround Time: Each service contains several deliverables. The turnaround time for any one deliverable (like new edits to a document based on client feedback) is a maximum of two business days (see the FAQs for more information). Total turnaround time is a function of a) the client’s availability to schedule calls and b) the amount of time the client requires to provide feedback on drafts. A typical timeline follows.

This eBook was written for the many MBA and EMBA applicants whose recommenders ask them to either write their own recommendation letter or to create a recommendation outline. It helps applicants identify and manage their recommenders and gives them a simple method for structuring and generating content for their recommendations (this is the same method used in the Recommendation Writing Service). The book also contains examples of recommendation outlines and 25 professional recommendations from successful applicants to elite MBA and EMBA programs (such as Wharton, HBS, Chicago Booth, etc.)

Mock Interview Service

$250

ADD SERVICE

An interview is a performance, and, as any actor will tell you, a good performance boils down to material (the actor’s lines) + delivery (the acting). The goal of a mock interview is to help you a) develop and refine your ‘lines’ or content and then b) improve your ‘acting’ or delivery of that content. Typically one or two mock interviews will get you where you need to be to walk into your MBA or EMBA interview with confidence.

mbaSTORY.builders understands that not every top MBA and EMBA program takes the same approach to interviewing applicants. Some programs use student or alumni interviewers while at others adcom members conduct interviews. Additionally, some schools have a ‘blind’ interview format (in which the interviwer has not read the candidate’s application) and other schools use an application-based approach. You may already know that a HBS interview is drastically different from a Stanford interview, and that both differ from the MIT Sloan interview.

Mock MBA and EMBA interviews can be conducted over the phone or Zoom/Skype. If clients wish, the mock interview can be recorded for future reference (something many past clients have found helpful).

The purpose of your written application is to secure you an interview. The purpose of an interview is for admissions committee to gain insight into a) your interpersonal skills, b) your ability to lead/persuade others, c) how you think and tackle issues (your cognitive abilities) and d) your capacity to think laterally/creatively and finally e) whether you’ll add value to their community.

In a good interview, you’ll provide logical and well-thought-out answers to the practical and behavioral questions put to you. In a great interview you’ll also manage to:

  • Control any insecurities
  • Radiate a positive attitude and polish/executive presence
  • Demonstrate that you will bring value to the school and the employers that recruit there
  • Crush any negative judgments or pre-conceived ideas the interviewer may have about you

Deliverable: Mock interviews last 90 minutes and are conducted over the phone or via a video conferencing platform like Zoom or Skype. At the end of your mock interview, candidates can opt to receive an audio recording of the call for future reference.

Process:

Before the mock interview the client is contacted to confirm what type of mock interview is the best fit (school-specific? behavioral? traditional?)  → The client emails any relevant documents (such as your application, resume, etc.) → 90-minute mock MBA or EMBA interview → Client receives an audio recording of their session.

Mock Interview Focus: Content Development and Delivery

  • Content Development: Your consultant will help you develop and refine material to answer interview questions.
  • Content Delivery: Your consultant will look for ways to improve your body language, eye contact, and the cadence of your speech.

Mock Interview Questions: Behavioral vs. Traditional

  • Behavioral Interview Questions: Behavioral interviews use questions about past situations and behaviors to predict future performance. Behavioral interview questions are easy to recognize because they usually begin with some variation of ‘Tell me about a time when…’ Here are some examples: ‘Tell me about a time when…you were part of a team that was under-performing? … you mentored someone? … you received unexpected feedback? … you persuaded someone to see things from your point of view? …. you were forced to compromise? etc.
  • Traditional Interview Questions: Tell me about yourself. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Why are you interested in pursuing an MBA at Wharton? How will you contribute to the MBA community at Stanford? Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? etc.
  • 50/50 Mix: These interviews contain a mix of traditional and behavioral interview questions.

Payment and discount-related questions are answered here.

Part 1. Candidate answers the mock interview question Tell me about yourself. The candidate responds by giving a chronological overview of his work experience (which is a common approach people take to this interview question).
Part 2. Feeback on candidate's response to the mock interview question Tell me about yourself. The candidate learns to structure his answer to this question in terms of professional growth (rather than chronologically).
Part 1. Candidate answers the behavioral mock interview question Tell me about a time when you mentored someone. The candidate gives a lengthy response (listen to part 2 for feedback).
Part 2. Feedback on candidate's response to the mock behavioral interview question Tell me about a time when you mentored someone. The candidate learns to provide necessary background information and a broader sense of the candidate's philosophy of mentoring.

Hourly Advisory Service

ADD SERVICE

The prorated Hourly Advisory Service is a catch-all service that applies to any conversations that aren’t a part of a pre-defined service. There is no written follow-up or editing involved in this service – it’s simply phone or Zoom/Skype-based feedback and guidance on an issue or document.

In the past clients have used the Hourly Advisory Service to:

  • Discuss MBA or EMBA school selection or delve into where their career is headed and whether an MBA/EMBA makes sense
  • Talk about their next career move and how they can obtain it without an MBA/EMBA
  • Narrow down their shortlist of MBA programs
  • Pinpoint the best short and long-term goals to present to the admissions committee
  • Brainstorm and outline an essay
  • Generate story-based bullet points for a resume
  • Rather than using the Content Review Service to receive written feedback, a client may use the Hourly Advisory Service to receive verbal feedback on a document (this could be an essay, recommendation, email etc.)
